Key Control System
A key control system is an organized method (often involving secure lockers and electronic tracking) for managing vehicle keys at a dealership. Given the high value of inventory on the lot, dealerships must ensure keys don’t get lost or misused. Modern key control systems use locked cabinets where each key is tagged and can only be removed by authorized staff (often using PINs or access cards), and they log who took a key and when. In Canada, this is important not only for preventing theft (someone could steal a car if they get a key) but also for operational efficiency – knowing which salesperson has which vehicle out for a test drive. A robust key control process can lower insurance risk and enhance security by ensuring accountability for keys at all times.
