Test Drive Security

Test drive security refers to the procedures in place to ensure vehicles and staff/customers remain safe during a test drive. For Canadian dealerships, this typically involves verifying the customer’s driver’s licence and holding a copy or details before handing over keys. Many dealerships require a staff member to accompany the customer on the test drive, especially for high-value vehicles, both for safety and sales purposes. Some use dealer plates or temporary plates that are tracked. Security measures also cover having insurance coverage on the vehicle during the drive and setting a reasonable route. In addition, if a solo test drive is allowed, the dealership ensures they have the customer’s personal information and maybe a deposit or the keys to the customer’s own car to reduce risk of theft. These steps prevent scenarios where a thief poses as a buyer and steals the car on a “test drive.”
