What is API Integration?
An API integration is a connection that lets two software systems share data and functions automatically. API stands for application programming interface, essentially a defined way for programs to talk to each other. In a dealership, API integrations connect the CRM to the DMS, inventory feeds, lender portals, credit tools, marketing platforms, and manufacturer systems, so information flows without manual re-entry. For example, an integration can push a completed deal into accounting, pull real-time inventory into the website, or send a credit application to a lender network. Good integrations reduce errors, save staff time, and keep data consistent across systems, which is essential for accurate reporting and a smooth customer experience. When evaluating dealership technology, the depth and reliability of its integrations often matter as much as its features, since a disconnected tool creates silos and duplicate work.
