What is Closing Ratio?

Closing ratio, also called conversion rate, is the percentage of opportunities a salesperson or dealership turns into sales. It is calculated by dividing the number of vehicles sold by the number of qualified opportunities, such as ups, leads, or appointments, over a period. Different closing ratios matter for different stages: showroom traffic to sale, internet lead to sale, and appointment shown to sale. Tracking closing ratio reveals where deals are won or lost and lets managers compare performance, set goals, and target coaching. A low lead-to-sale ratio might point to slow follow-up, while a low shown-to-sale ratio points to in-store process gaps. Accurate CRM data is essential, since miscounting opportunities distorts the ratio. Improving closing ratio is often more profitable than simply buying more leads, because it multiplies the value of existing traffic.
