What is Cooling-Off Period?

A cooling-off period is a window during which a consumer can cancel certain contracts without penalty. Many Canadian car buyers assume every vehicle purchase includes one, but for most in-dealership vehicle sales there is no automatic cooling-off right once the contract is signed and the deal is final. Cancellation rights more commonly attach to specific situations defined by provincial consumer protection law, such as certain door-to-door or off-premises sales, some add-on product contracts, or leases in particular circumstances. Because the rules vary by province and by transaction type, dealers should never tell customers a purchase can simply be undone within a few days unless that right genuinely applies. Explaining the finality of the deal clearly at signing prevents misunderstandings and complaints, and helps the F&I office stay compliant with provincial rules.
