What is Credit Bureau?

A credit bureau is an agency that collects and maintains records of how consumers borrow and repay credit. In Canada the two main bureaus are Equifax and TransUnion. They compile credit reports showing a person's loans, credit cards, payment history, balances, and public records, and they generate credit scores lenders use to assess risk. When a dealership submits a financing application, the lender pulls the customer's file from a bureau to decide approval and rate. Dealers must obtain proper consent before requesting a credit report and handle the resulting information under PIPEDA and provincial privacy law. Understanding what appears on a bureau file helps F&I managers explain approvals, structure deals for different credit tiers, and guide customers who want to improve their standing.
