What is Debt Service Ratio?

Debt service ratio measures how much of a customer's income goes toward debt payments, and lenders use it to judge whether a buyer can afford a vehicle loan. Two versions are common: the gross debt service ratio, focused on housing costs, and the total debt service ratio, which adds all other obligations including the proposed car payment. Auto lenders look closely at the total ratio, generally wanting all debt payments to stay within an acceptable percentage of gross income. A ratio that is too high can lead to a decline or a request for a co-signer or larger down payment. Canadian F&I managers who understand debt service ratios can structure deals, term length, and down payment to bring a marginal application within a lender's guidelines.
