What is Large Language Model?
A large language model, or LLM, is an advanced type of artificial intelligence trained on vast amounts of text to understand and generate human-like language. LLMs power many of the AI tools reshaping dealership operations, including conversational assistants that answer customer questions, draft follow-up messages, summarize long call transcripts, and help staff quickly find information. Their strength is flexibility: rather than following rigid scripts, an LLM can handle varied, unscripted customer language and produce relevant, natural responses. For dealerships, LLM-based tools can respond to leads instantly, personalize communication at scale, and reduce repetitive administrative work. Responsible use matters, though, since LLMs can occasionally produce incorrect information, so systems should ground answers in real dealership data like inventory and hours, and route sensitive matters to people. Understanding what an LLM can and cannot do helps dealers deploy AI where it genuinely adds value.
