What is Regenerative Braking?
Regenerative braking is a system in electric and hybrid vehicles that recovers energy normally lost during braking and feeds it back into the battery. When the driver lifts off the accelerator or brakes, the electric motor runs in reverse as a generator, slowing the vehicle while converting its motion into electricity. This extends driving range and reduces wear on the conventional friction brakes, which can lower maintenance costs over time. Many EVs offer adjustable regeneration levels, including one-pedal driving where lifting off the pedal slows the car significantly. For dealerships, explaining regenerative braking helps set customer expectations about the different driving feel of an EV and highlights genuine ownership benefits like reduced brake service.
